Private housing

This chapter considers key developments within the private housing market. In particular it examines the impact on affordability of continuing house prices, and presents new data on the range of mortgage advance to income ratios for first time buyers in 2002.

It also provides a cautionary note on the latest FES data on endowment payments, and contrasts the sharp rise in the recorded availability of 'buy to let' mortgages with the very limited net changes in the overall size of the private rented sector.
