UK HOUSING REVIEW 2020 from the Chartered Institute of Housing CIH

Welcome to the 2020 edition of the UK Housing Review, edited by Mark Stephens, John Perry, Peter Williams, Gillian Young and Suzanne Fitzpatrick.

The 28th edition was launched in March 2020. You can buy a print copy, and certain sections are available online. On this page you can link to six Commentary Chapters by Mark Stephens, John Perry, Peter Williams and Suzanne Fitzpatrick, and by guest contributors Beth Watts and Janice Blenkinsopp. You can also link to all of the Compendium of Tables, prepared by Gillian Young and Alan Lewis, which can be downloaded in PDF or Excel format.

Commentary Chapters in this year's Review include analysis of trends in UK housing markets and in housing needs, as well as of housing provision and public expenditure on housing, the government's current investment plans and topics such as homelessness.

'For 28 years the UKHR has held a mirror up to government policy. A copy is always on our desk.' David Montague, London & Quadrant.

Financial support for the Review has been received from: Clarion, Crisis, Housing Studies Charitable Trust, London & Quadrant, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, the Scottish Government, Settle Group, Southern Housing Group, The Housing Finance Corporation and the Welsh Government.

The print version of the UK Housing Review 2020 includes further Contemporary Issues Chapters by leading analysts, and is available to order from the Chartered Institute of Housing. The topics covered are:

  • an overview of housing supply in the UK, looking at how it has evolved across the private sector and the two parts of the social sector
  • a review of the funding of UK housing associations and how it has changed and continues to adapt in response to new circumstances
  • lessons we can learn from Europe, in particular from the housing systems in Sweden and Germany
  • analysis of recent comparative statistics on affordable housing across the four UK countries produced by the Office for National Statistics.

On October 5 2020, the UK Housing Review 2020 Briefing Paper was launched at a virtual CIH event. It offers commentary on issues arising since March 2020 and is available as a free download.
